“Herauf unten rundes und rundes”

January 29, 2009

(“Up, Down, Round and Round”)

My next film was chosen as one of the 3 project highlights in the Berlinale, with Margie doing the pitching in early Feb. Not jealous at all about that. I hate pitching.

More on the selection here.

In preparation for the pitch, had drinks the other night with Bing Lao, with whom we’re consulting for the script. In two hours of conversation Monster and I had a master class on screenwriting. Bing of course is one of our best writers, having done Serbis, Jeffrey Jeturian’s films Pila Balde and Tuhog, and consulted on the screenplays of Kubrador (also by Jeff) and Francis X’s Jay. Though I’ve met him before there’s still a degree of being starstruck. And of course hearing him praise my first film was very flattering.

We talked about real people and real situations, how it will take a hundred years before a wide audience would appreciate the movies we make, his next movie about a doomed bus ride (one to look out for definitely), and how long it takes for him to write.

On the way home I got the feeling I was shaken awake.

Stupidity is the universal language.

-Leslie (Lili Taylor) in Casa de los Babys

TOP 100 FILMS OF ALL TIME

No. 89: CASA DE LOS BABYS

(John Sayles, 2003)

Casa de los Babys

I’m a big fan of the fiercely independent American director John Sayles, my favorite being Lone Star. Managed to find a copy of the terrific Casa de los Babys. In a Latin American country, six American women seeking to adopt a child, wait a long time for their paperwork to go through. That’s the simple line of it.

But it’s not just about these mothers. There’s the owner of the hotel, her activist son, there’s a housekeeper, the lawyer taking care of the paperwork, a street urchin, an unemployed man, all part of the story. And John Sayles lays out these stories of motherhood, of a superior power taking advantage of a weaker country, of poverty, of longing; all of this with no judgment, no sentimentality, and it rings of truth.

In this scene, Eileen, a British woman, talks to Asuncion the housekeeper, as Asuncion cleans her room in the motel Casa de los Babys. Eileen is in the middle of telling her fantasies of having a daughter. Asuncion doesn’t speak a word of English. Eileen knows only basic Spanish words. Neither woman really understand each others words, but they communicate on a deeper level.

==

Eileen: …And then later, when I take her to Shakey’s or Ground Round, whatever seems like a big treat to her, and I let her order french fries, as long as she has some of my soup too, and she tells me stories about her classmates, or she tells me stories that she’s made up, or whatever. We sit and we talk in the booth. And we’re surrounded by other mothers and their kids. And I am just one of them, you know? And then later when we walk home from wherever I can park the car, there is the sound of our feet on the new snow, her taking two steps to my one. Then maybe if they haven’t shoveled the walk, like they usually don’t, I go in front, to break the way for her. This is ignoring the fact that I am supposed to be at work, right? I’m the one with the job.

Asuncion listens. She sits on the edge of the bed, nodding. She speaks in Spanish.

Asuncion: I have a little girl up North. I named her Esmeralda. She’ll be four years old on the ninth of April. Maybe she lives where it snows, who knows? I was so young. I had to take care of my brother and sister. I had to work. The nuns, they came to see me. They said that it would be best to give her up.

Sometimes  when a new group of mothers comes, I pick one. A good one. I try to imagine her face, her voice. When I think of Esmeralda with her other mother up there in the North, I hope that my little girl has found a mother like you.

Asuncion stands and leaves. Eileen looks at her.

Eileen: I didn’t get any of it, I’m sorry.

Asuncion: Excuse me.

We’re in Rotterdam!!!

January 21, 2009

Our two-minute short film, Mga Pusong Gala (Stray Hearts) originally a TVC for Cinemalaya ‘08 directed by our frequent colleague Mario Cornejo, is selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Check out screening schedules here.

Not bad for a film that took half a day to make, no money (okay fine, 4 thousand bucks), and a lot of heart.

Things to look forward to.

January 19, 2009

2008 was intense. I’m starting the year exhausted and stumbling, still reeling from all that’s happened (movies! death!). Still, am in reasonably good shape physically, I’ve quit smoking again (19 days and counting), and am overall in a good frame of mind. My bank account was raped; gangbanged by the triple celebrations of my birthday, Christmas and New Year, and the economic forecast is scary but I’m taking my sister Karen’s mantra: “I refuse to take part in this recession”.

At least there are a few things to look forward to in ‘09.

Cambodia / Vietnam

angkor-wat1

Going end of Feb to Ho Chi Minh / Phnom Penh / Siem Reap. My Christmas gift to Tracy. Wuhoo!

New office!

New place, new energy, new people. Perfect way to start the year.

A world with President Obama

Obama

Things can’t get worse than now. I hope.

Baby Angelo goes Up, Down, Round and Round the world…

Baby Angelo

Akyat Baba, Paikot ikot

New Arkeo movies!

Kano

Kano coming in May or whenever Monster feels like it’s done…

Lakad ni Sammy

Okay this is a cheat since we started doing this Dec. 08, but it isn’t finished, we’ll be finishing this early February ‘09.

Other people’s movies.

Always something to look forward to! The early part of the year is when we get to see the good movies that showed around the world last year. If we’re lucky. Otherwise, Mininova’s a click away, heh heh.

Adoration

Happy Go Lucky

Since Altman died wala na akong inaabangang pelikula ng isang director. Close though is Canadian Atom Egoyan; his new one Adoration should be available soon. Also, I love Mike Leigh, his new one Happy Go Lucky should be good.

Watchmen Watchmen

And then there’s the film adaptaion of the best, hands-down, super-hero graphic novel ever: The Watchmen. The shot above is of the Minutemen, World War II predecessors of the present-day Watchmen. Too cool.

Let the Right One In Tell No One Before the Fall Slumdog Millionaire

And some foreign films: Let The Right One In (Tomas Alfredson) is a Swedish film about a friendship between a loner boy and a vampire; Tell No One (Guillaume Canet) is a French thriller; It’s three days before the end of the world in a small Spanish town in Before the Fall (F. Javier Gutierrez); and Slumdog Millionaire (Danny Boyle), it’s not a foreign-language film but hey it happens in India.

…and some good TV!

Number 6

Battlestar Galactica’s final season. WOOT!!! Just saw the first episode, and I fell off my chair. I’m strapped in for the ride.

Survivor 18

Survivor: Tocantins. Yes I still watch it and yes it’s still good, 18 seasons after.

Celebrations

January 14, 2009

Can’t seem to sit myself down long enough to write a 2008 recap, or a Looking Forward to 2009 entry, so just photoblogging on the long holiday instead.

Chums in Antonio's

Aside from the usual family stuff, had a nice Christmas dinner with the gang in Antonio’s, slash-Monster’s birthday salubong. Nice weather, great food, great company, in other words, very early 30’s na gimmick. Wrapped it up in Dencio’s due to Antonio’s early closing time. Guys went crazy for the sisig. Babaw lang pala ng kaligayahan.

2009 started fun.

CD on a stick

After the fireworks, drove through a smoggy city to watch CD dance on a stick with another girl at Warehouse.

With CD

Mugging with CD afterwards. Her tandem partner is in the background. I asked CD what the partner does when she’s not poledancing. She’s taking her masters in Statistics. I guess the girl likes polls *and* poles.  Ba-dum-dum-psssh!!

New Year Gang

Split Warehouse in favor of better music and cheap alcohol (that’s all we wanted), and ended up in the Fort, going through bars, with people half our size and age. That was strange. Ended up on a bar with decent alcohol. Then breakfast at Swiss Inn. Sarap.

With Vito

New Year’s Day at my best friend Niv’s, where I finally meet my newest godson, Baby Vito Valerio, born two days before my birthday.

With Tracy

3rd January was two weddings, first was Tracy’s cousin. It was nice, a little on the snooze side, cause Rina and Marlon have a kid already and have been living together a while, but it’s cool. She was beautiful. Had a bottle of Johnny all to myself. Look at me and Trace here so spiffy.

with Marica and Beng

Rushed to National Museum to the wedding of one of my favorite couples, Marica and Beng, my old teammates from frisbee. I just love these guys. All I can say is, finally! Good things do happen.

Much later, more alcohol, with same couple.

Got home significantly hammered, I’m talking high school hammered, but I guess that’s what New Year’s is about.

More soon.
